The School of Sports Communication & Media and Information Technology is located in the main campus of Shandong Sports University in Jinan, China.The School of Sports Communication & Media and Information Technology was established in July 2016, consisting of disciplines and faculties originally belonging to the School of Basic Sports Sciences and the School of Social Sciences of Sports.

There are six majors in the school: E-sports and Management (school-enterprise cooperation model), Journalism (school-enterprise cooperation model), Data Science and Big Data Technology (school-enterprise cooperation model), English, Computer Science and Technology, and Educational Technology. Therefore, a personnel training mode with sport characteristics has been fostered while disciplines of sport, journalism, pedagogy, engineering and literature are all interdisciplinary. Through more than ten years of reform and exploration, the school has built the first undergraduate major in E-Sports and Management in China, the first major in Data Science and Big Data in domestic sport colleges and universities, and the only Journalism (Sports News) major in Shandong province.

The school comprises of data science and big data technology teaching and research office, sports news teaching and research office, electronic competitive sports and management teaching and research office, English teaching and research office, and comprehensive teaching and research office (Rizhao campus), which undertake the construction of various majors, talent development, teaching and research echelon building of the school as well as the teaching of Computer Literacy Foundation, College English, College Chinese Language and Literature and other undergraduate public compulsory courses and basic courses for postgraduate and adult education.

At present, there are 49 teachers, including 4 professors, 19 associate professors and 26 lecturers, among the faculty members,12  have doctoral degrees and 36 have master’s degrees. There are 15 master tutors and 15 are double-qualified teachers in the faculty. The school has 3 university-level teaching and research teams and 2 university-level ideological and political demonstration centers.

The school currently has 11 laboratories, including a computer public basic laboratory, an English language laboratory, a computer software laboratory, a sports software development laboratory, a computer hardware laboratory, an electrical and electronic laboratory, a sports digital media laboratory, a sports information collection laboratory, a somatosensory technology laboratory, a photography laboratory and a video recording laboratory. The school also has 3 school-enterprise cooperation experimental sites, including an electronic competitive sports training room, a convergence media news studio, and a sports big data analysis laboratory. The facilities provide solid teaching equipment and basic conditions for the construction and development of the majors.

The school attaches importance to teaching research and scientific research. 21 Sports+ collaborative education practice platforms and  5 professional studios have been established, and 10 academic research directions have been created.It has hosted 63 projects at all levels, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, provincial and ministerial level, and departmental level, and has won the first prize of Science and Technology Progress of China Light Industry Federation and 26 other awards at all levels, published more than 50 articles and 24 textbooks and books. It is the first one to offer more than 20 cross-disciplinary courses such as English for Sports, Introduction to Sports Data and Planning and Practice of Sports News Reporting in national universities, and Introduction to E-Sports has been approved as a first-class undergraduate course in Shandong Province. It has carried out a series of researches and practices in the fields of sports information collection and processing, sports information system construction, sports integration media reporting, sports event communication, E-Sports education, E-Sports application management, etc. It has achieved milestones and played an important leading and exemplary role.

The school has been actively carrying out practical education and has achieved fruitful results. The school, giving full play to the advantages of school-enterprise cooperation, cooperates with enterprises and the related industries, undertakes various competitions and conferences at all levels, and participates in social service activities for more than 100 times up to now. Awarded 28 national and provincial university students’ innovative and entrepreneurial projects, students of the school have been organized to participate in various innovation and entrepreneurship competitions and professional skills competitions, and they won the provincial and ministerial awards for more than 100 times, including the “Internet Plus” college students innovation and entrepreneurship competition in Shandong province. The school has a strong learning atmosphere: 20% of the graduates are enrolled into master’s education and 70% employed in related professional posts such as party and government organs at all levels, schools and enterprises.

With the development concept of strengthening the integration of industry and education, reinforcing the interdisciplinary, actively serving the society, and persisting in the characteristics development, the school actively meets the needs of the national major strategies and the local economic and social development, serves the construction of a healthy country, a strong country in education and sports. The school also builds new integration disciplines with sports characteristics, implements new models of talent training that integrates industry and education, innovates new systems of practical education that integrates knowledge and action, and cultivates professional talents in digital sports, convergence media sports, and e-sports management, comprehensively promoting characteristic development in major, combined training in talent, and all-round abilities in teaching staff, and striving to build high-level application-oriented sports specialty disciplines in China.
